One of my New Year's Resolutions this year was to get healthier. Some of my readers may remember me writing about my thyroid problem before. It has really made losing weight hard. During my husbands 4th deployment I had lost some weight but then my medication was "off" and I gained about 20lbs in 2months. Very discouraging!!
I have decided that this year, I WILL NOT let myself get discouraged. No matter what is thrown at me, I WILL push through and keep going. One thing I have noticed with all my reading on weight loss, exercise, healthy eating and the fad diets (which I do not recommend) is that you have to be consistent! I use to find any and every excuse to not exercise. When I had my my breast reduction my last excuse went out the window. I do something EVERY day, even if it is just going for a walk.

October 8th - October 12th (2012)
Well, here's week two of my 4 Weeks of Fun - not a good week at all. I only exercised 2 days of the 5 and that's my fault because I let personal shit get in my way. All I wanted to do at the end of the week was mope around and not do a thing....so that's what I did... except for the housework, can't let that go lol

4 Weeks of Fun!!
On Monday, October 1st, I wrote up 4wks worth of "exercises" to do to push my butt into gear. I may not follow each day exactly, depends on how I feel physically, but I WILL do something everyday. I have some exercise videos that I want to start doing so they are what I'm focusing on this month. I want to see what I like and what works for me.

Watch What You Eat!
If you're looking to lose weight, you HAVE to watch what you eat! I have read that "controlling your portion size is a key element in bringing your body to a state of controlled and manageable weight." I believe this to be true!! A few years ago when I lost just under 50lbs, watching what I ate played a major part in my weight loss.
I used a food journal and wrote down everything I ate/drank. I cut down my portion sizes to NORMAL servings and counted my calories. By counting calories and writing down exactly what I was eating and drinking, I could see where I needed improvement and how I could make the most of my calories. It didn't long to figure out I could eat more and feel more satisfied by cutting junk and replacing it with fruits and veggies.

Health/Fitness "Quiz"
Two important things need to happen for you to get healthy and fit. First, you need to have the right attitude. Second, you need make a commitment! After you've got that done, it's good to have a baseline to start at so you can physically see where you can start making better choices and start the journey to a healthier and more fit "you"!
In a book I'm reading, there is this Health/Fitness "Quiz". It helps you develop your Health/Fitness profile so you know where to go from there. When you're done answering the quiz and you get your "number", go back and see where you need improvement and set your goals from there!

HIIT - High Intensity Interval Training
I'm always googling things about weight loss and strength training and what are the best things to do. Not only did I keep seeing things about HIIT, but I have seen others actually talking about it. So for those who may not know, HIIT is High Intensity Interval Training.
What exactly does this mean?
HIIT is a type of training where you alternate short, high intensity exercises with recovery intervals. For example, sprinting for 60 seconds and walking for 2 minutes. Repeating for 30mins which includes a 5min warm-up walk and a 5min cool-down walk.

Starting with just One Step
When I was a teenager I use to jog every night. Then I had kids and got lazy lol... I let myself go and before long I didn't know where to start to pick up the pieces and put myself back together again. Then I thought, "I'll start with one step."
I've been going through some personal things and I needed a way to get out some of my aggression...my anger..my hurt... I know I need to get healthy and lose weight so I decided to work on myself mentally & physically.. walking does both!
I grabbed my walking shoes, my iPOD Touch & my bottle of water and got my ass out the door. In the mornings I'll walk my daughter to school and then just keep going. For now, I'm aiming for at least 2 miles a day and I want to work up to at least 5 miles a day. I use http://www.jogtracker.com/ to track my walking. I have the app on my phone and the gps tracks it for me and directly uploads it to the site when I save it. It figures how far you walked, speed and calories burned. You can even add friends for support on JogTracker - look me up! My username is "jamielynn1027".
I like JogTracker because it is good to see my progress and you can earn nifty little "medals" lol I know it's only the internet, but it's cute =)
Walking helps me clear my mind and on the days I walk, I actually feel more energetic the rest of the day.
I have also been spending less time on Facebook b/c of my walking and it's wonderful!! As much as I love Facebook, I don't log seeing the negativity all the time...and sadly, as much as I want to, I can't control what other people post LOL Not reading all the negativity has positively affected me =) When you read and see all negative stuff, you slowly start feeling negative about things... and right now, I don't need it... I need positivity!! Facebook was poisoning my thoughts lol...
You can google all the benefits of walking and read about it, OR you can just get out there and do it and feel the benefits for yourself =)
BTW, I've lost 5 pounds in less than 2wks from adding walking to my (almost) daily routine. =)

My Morning Smoothie - delish!
Yesterday I bought a new blender so that I could start making my smoothies again. I find it to be cheaper this way than buying expensive meal replacement shakes. When I went to the commissary yesterday I stocked up on fruit (fresh & frozen), organic soy milk, protein powder and nonfat yogurt.
In my blender I used:
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup unsweetened organic soy milk (45 cals)
1/2 scoop 100% Whey Protein powder (70 cals)
1/2 cup nonfat plain yogurt (50 cals)
1 Tbsp chia seed gel (10 cals)
1/2 banana (53 cals)
2/3 cup frozen strawberries (50 cals)
*you can add an artificial sweetner if you want, sometimes I do, sometimes I don't..
Follow the links to see the health benefits of the items I used (you can also just google yourself to find our more than what I provide):
Soy Milk
Whey Protein
Yogurt
Chia Seeds
Bananas
Strawberries
Here are my pics =)
It's yummy =)

Weight Loss Tip - Eat Breakfast!!
I know that some people simply aren't "breakfast people"... I'm not really big on breakfast either, but during my reading around "google" I have seen over and over again that eating breakfast helps with weight loss. I thought back to when I lost weight before and I realized that breakfast was a part of my regimen because I ate every 2 to 3 hours, starting within an hour of waking.
When you eat breakfast, it keeps your body from slipping into the "starvation mode"...eating breakfast will also jump start your metabolism for the day. If you skip breakfast you run the risk of over eating later in the day. Make it a point to eat breakfast every day for 2 weeks and I am willing to bet you will start feeling better during the day...
Since I'm not really into breakfast, I like smaller options -
*hardboiled egg and a few ounces of cheese
*a slimfast shake or home made smoothie
*serving of oatmeal with a little sugar and cinnamon to taste and a piece of fruit
*2 scrambled eggs and 2 pieces of turkey bacon
*whole wheat english muffin with peanut butter

Today is the day!! (weight loss/health)
Over the weekend I went and bought a treadmill. I was contemplating between a treadmill or elliptical, but I look at the elliptical in the gym and want to cry lol..so a friend (Thanks Kevin!) told me that I should pick what I enjoy doing and will keep me motivated. So, the treadmill won. =)
Yesterday, Darrell put it together for me (thanks babe!). Today will be the day I start using it =)
Last night, Darrell gave me an iPod touch and this morning I loaded some music on it so I can "get my jam on" while on the treadmill.
My daily goals for now:
*get on the treadmill for at least an hour a day
*keep track of my calories (between 1200 & 1600 a day) with my "lose it" app
*keep track of my exercise on the "lose it" app too
*I'll be doing sit-ups, push-ups, and weight/resistant exercises with the stuff I have at home. Once I make up my schedule, I will share it =)
*I will start using my Zumba fitness for the wii but this will be every other day
That's all for now lol

Love Tea? Me too! and it's healthy for you!
I've always loved tea... hot tea or cold, sweet or not... I love it all. I've decided to cut back my coffee intake and up the amount of tea I drink since I have read that tea is good for you and it has about half the amount of caffeine in it as coffee. (I'll never give up my coffee completely...just can't do it lol)
Here are 10 health benefits to drinking tea -
1. Tea contains antioxidants. Antioxidants can help slow down the aging process, and help cells regenerate and repair. Many studies suggest antioxidants also assist our bodies in preventing cancer.
2. Tea can lower stress hormone levels. Black tea can reduce the effects of stressful events by lowering the amount of the stress hormone cortisol in the body.
3. Tea fights cavities and reduces plaque. Compounds in tea are capable of killing or suppressing growth and acid production of cavity causing bacteria in our mouths.
4. Tea keeps you hydrated. Every cup of tea you drink, especially low or no caffeine varieties, counts as a cup of water with the added bonus of providing antioxidants as well.
5. Tea may reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack. Tea can help prevent formation of dangerous blood clots which are often the cause of strokes and heart attacks.
6. Tea can help lower blood pressure. Drinking green tea daily can reduce your risk of hypertension by up to 50%.
7. Tea aids your body in digestion. Tea has been used for thousands of years as an after-meal digestive aid. It can also help relieve stomach cramps.
8. Tea may help prevent diabetes. There is some evidence to suggest that green tea might help to lower the risk of getting Type 2 Diabetes.
9. Tea can help beat bacteria. An Egyptian study testing the effects of green tea on antibiotics found the tea to enhance the bacteria killing effects of the drugs.
10. Tea aids your immune defenses. A study comparing the immune activity levels of coffee drinkers vs. tea drinkers found the tea drinkers to have levels up to five times higher.
Since I'm watching my calories and keeping track of my serving sizes I have been watching my sugar intake as well. Sugar will add up fast... so I have been drinking my tea unsweetened. I drink regular tea, flavor infused tea, herbal tea...all tea!

And so it begins -
As I said in a previous post - My Next Journey - I mentioned I'd be working on getting healthier and losing weight. Well, I've started =)
On November 2nd I started counting my calories again and doing portion control... eating every few hours and drinking tons of water. A few things have been helping me. For one, I have thyroid medication I have to take every day and so I don't forget, I set a daily alarm on my phone. Taking my medication is very important b/c if my levels don't stay right, I will never lose weight and I feel crappy. Next, I downloaded 3 apps on my phone. One app is called "Lose It". I put in my height, weight and age and said what my goal weight is and how much I want to lose each week. It tells me my daily caloric allowance. I have been keeping my calories around 1500 a day and I record EVERYTHING I eat in this app. I measure out everything I eat. The next app is a water app. I edited it to remind me 12 times a day to drink a glass (8oz) of water. This has really helped me keep up with my water intake. My third app is "jogtracker". I put in my height and weight info and then I track by GPS how far and how fast I walk. It then calculates the calories I burned. I can then put that amount into my "Lose It" app under the exercise section. The last thing that has been helping me is my weight loss support group. Bunch of great chicks who are all supportive of each other =)
Since November 2nd, doing only the things I have said, I have lost 2.5 pounds... in 9 days. I'm excited to start adding some exercise in there as soon as my plastic surgeon gives me the "ok"...and I'm sure he will at my visit on the 16th.
So for now, it is just baby steps... I intend on making slow but steady progress. A quick fix is never the right fix =)
Feel free to share any "health" or "weight loss" tips you have =) Success stories are welcome too, great for motivation for me and for those who read my blog =)

My Next Journey..
The next small "journey" I'll be embarking on is getting healthier!! This means losing weight, toning up, eating the right things (with indulgences here and there)and getting more active!
I'm also going to get healthy "mentally"... flush out the negativity in my life around me and IN me... you know that sometimes we can be our own worst enemy.
So, I'll be a lot of research on all kinds of things related to this and I will share it with my readers... I will blog about this journey too, just like I have been doing with my Breast Reduction.
I won't be able to start exercising yet until my doctor gives me the "okay"...it's only been 2 1/2 weeks since my surgery.
I hope that by blogging about this and sharing what I find, my feelings and my results (or setbacks) will help hold me accountable to myself AND help encourage others who want to make healthy changes in their life as well... until next post =)

More happy pills please?
I'm one big ball of anxiety wrapped in "AHHHHHHHHHHHH".... these next few days can't go by fast enough for me. I feel like I am going absolutely crazy.
When he gets home we are going to New Jersey for christmas and I think that is what has me worked up.... I'm not looking forward to it at all. Don't get me wrong, I want to see my family and friends, but it's gonna be way too much for me for other reasons, but for my husband and my kids, I will suck it up and go. Just pray for me =)

Yesterday I went with my awesome buddies, Sharon and Sara, to stand in the cold and wait for Ludacris. Thank God we got there early because apparently he didn't get to see everyone and people were mad. So, I got a cd signed by him and my pic with him.

Now, looking at the picture, I see I need to stop fooling around and get back to losing weight... I was happy with losing 30 pounds.... AT FIRST... but now I need to get working on my next thirty. So, it's gonna be back to counting calories and exercising again. Gotta get my sexii on =) But first, I gotta get in gear and get ready for homecoming!! Yay!

Just because I'm not neurotic about it....
...doesn't mean I don't care!! Seriously, come on!!
Here's the deal:
Since April, I have lost over 30 pounds and I wanted a break. For the past 2 weeks I haven't been doing anything. Today is the day I was going to get back into it and work on my next 30 pound goal. I was a hundred pounds over weight and that seemed so overwhelming to me so I had decided to break it into smaller goals, because I can admit that I will give up easy if I feel too overwhelmed. All I wanted was a little break!! It may not work for everyone, but it is working for me. I feel ready to start on my next goal. I was even talking about it last night with my girlfriends that I'm ready to get back on track.
Well, my husband has a damn fit! All of sudden he assumes I'm not motivated or I don't care, or I don't take being overweight serious. I know he means well, but it still hurts. He is a fitness freak and has never had to deal with weight issues or health problems so everything I say sounds like an excuse to him. I know he loves he me, but I feel like sometimes nothing is ever good enough.
So, I hung up on him. Yes, he is deployed and I hung up on him. Crucify me now!! I even ignored his call when he called back. I just don't want to feel upset. Getting upset is not motivation. Feeling like nothing is good enough for him, is not motivating me to do shit because no matter what I do, something I do will be wrong. He's at the gym every day. I wish I could go every day. As a matter of fact, me and my friend Mistey were talking and I told her once the kids start school, I want to go with her to the gym. I can't ask my friends to watch my kids every day so I can to the gym. I just won't do it.
Now to go back and call my school for the third time today to get them on the ball with ordering my books for my classes that started today!! UGH! Is it Tuesday yet?

What I've been doing to lose weight
I've had quite a few women ask me what I've been doing to lose weight. So, I've decided to just write about it and refer others here. =)
I actually went to a weight loss doctor, but not everyone has to do so. The things she has taught me you can find just by using google. Here is what I do:
First, and most importantly, I count my calories. Every single thing I eat is measured for portion control and counted. I keep all this recorded in a food journal so I can monitor the things I eat. It helps me decide where I can make better choices and what things I should cut out. I still eat things that people would consider "bad", but I just account for it in my daily caloric needs. I keep myself in between 1200 and 1400 calories a day. This cut my calorie intake by 1000 calories a day for a total of 7000 a week, which equals about 2 pounds of weight loss each week. One thing that helps me with counting calories is my "Calorie King" book. It has calories for everything in it, including fast food places and other things.
Now, because I was cutting calories so drastically, my doctor gave me a prescription appetite suppressant, but I don't suggest taking them without talking to your doctor about it. Some of them can have severe side effects, especially if you take other medications for health issues.
Second, and just as important as watching what you eat, is exercise! I know some people dread that word, it's evil and horrible!! LOL. I started out walking the track. I really recommend getting a pedometer if you want to walk. You will be able to track how far you walk and how fast you do it in.
I have also started resistance and slight weight training at home. Simple, cheap, and convenient if you can't go to the gym (or don't want to). I use bands and light weights. Exercise videos can help too.
Third, support!! I have support from my husband, my friends, and even my kids. Having support while trying to lose weight makes it so much better. It's great to hear, "You're doing great!", "I'm so proud of you!". My husband has been a blessing in supporting me with my weight loss, even from the desert!

My progress with my weight loss =)
I use to be a thin girl but not so much anymore. Last year I found out I have a thyroid problem and that explains the extreme weight gain over the past 3 yrs. I’ve been on thyroid meds for about a year and a half. They are still being tweaked until I get to my correct dose and will continue to be tweaked over the years for the rest of my life.
To help me with my weight loss, I decided to see a weight loss doctor. I had my first appointment on 4/20/2010. I was weighed and my body fat percentage was calculated too. We also took a "before pic". Here is one I have from Feb 2009 at the ball:

So, on 4/21/2010 I started my "diet". For the past 2 months I have been counting my calories and keeping a food journal. I write down EVERYTHING I eat and I measure everything too. I go walking, which I need to do more, and I've started adding more exercises too, including: weights and resistance bands, my wave/step, and my exercise ball. June 21st will officially be 2 months and I have lost over 20 pounds so far.
Here's a picture of us this year, Feb 2010, on our way to Disney:

Well, this is my progress so far! Yay me!!
